Change of power train…

The initial idea when starting this project was to create a EV powered 356 Replica. However, when pricing things up and looking at potential lead time, we decided to go for a traditional ICE route – at least for now…

Therefore, we picked up a good little runner on eBay to use as the basis of the powertrain, as shown below. We have some plans for the motor, which also gives us a something to occupy us whilst the body is being built and chassis shortened.

The photos in this part of the blog is a little out of sequence, but thought it best to keep all of the engine related posts together to show the evolution over time. The first task was to strip down the engine, removing all the external components to be able to polish it up again. The internal overhauling has already been done by the previous owner.

The old tin-ware on the engine was not in the best of shape and some of it clearly came from different specification engines and did not fit correctly. We have therefore bought a new set of tin to put back onto the engine, which was sent off for powedercoating.

The finished engine (shown below) including all of the upgrades, including:

  • Twin carbonators
  • New distributor, points, and vacuum unit
  • Plugs & HT leads
  • Timing & dynamo pulley
  • Classic fuel filter (albeit not plumed in just yet)
  • New tin-ware
  • Heating tubes

With the decals added, the engine is now looking as good as it is running and much more akin to a Porsche 356 engine.
